Our Scattered Ashes recording started with a desire to build a programme around Josquin’s setting of Psalm 50 (Miserere mei). While thinking about our approach this monolithic work, we were inspired by Prof. Patrick Macey’s remarkable research into Girolamo Savonarola and the influence he had on various Renaissance composers (including Josquin). The historical and musical connections are convincingly described in Macey’s book Bonfire Songs: Savonarola's Musical Legacy, which we highly recommend reading.
