Orlandus Lassus’ thirty-five Magnificats based on polyphonic models stand as one of the towering achievements of the 16th century, both in their stylistic breadth and the ingenuity they display. Drawing inspiration from Prof. David Crook’s Orlando di Lasso’s Imitation Magnificats for Counter-Reformation Munich, we immersed ourselves in the madrigals, motets and chansons that provided Lassus with the “base” material for his alchemy. We pair each of these works with its corresponding Magnificat, enabling the listener to experience the creativity with which Lassus transformed his models.
